More About Zakynthos

The island of Zakynthos Greece or Zante, a very popular destination, was called by the Venetian “The Flower of the Orient”, for being one of the most beautiful islands of the Ionians.

Zakynthos island has impressive landscapes, long golden sandy beaches diving into crystalline waters, a Marine Park for the protection of the sea-turtle, beautiful pine-covered mountains, traditional villages with stone houses, and a charming capital to offer, but also some animated beach resorts with many restaurants and bars, beautiful orthodox churches, archaeological sites and Venetian castles.

Zakynthos is also home to one of Greece’s most famous beaches: the Shipwreck beach. The ruins of the ship that has been washed out by the sea are located in the middle of a white sandy beach with crystalline waters, surrounded by vertical rock cliffs. An unforgettable scenery, that is only accessible by boat.

Zakynthos has a great variety of bars and night clubs located, for most of them, in the famous beach resorts of Laganas, Alykes, Tsilivi or Argasi. The clubs are opened all night long, filled with people having drinks, dancing and partying.

Zakynthos Greece or Zante is the southernmost of the six core Ionian Islands, and also the third largest of them, after Kefalonia and Corfu.

It is the eleventh island in size in Greece, with an area of 406 square kilometres, and also the second in population with approximately 35.000 inhabitants. The island is situated 17 nautical miles west of Peloponnesus and 13 nautical miles south of Kefalonia.

The island was called by the Venetians “Fioro di Levante”, which means “Flower of the Orient”, because the island is characterised by a rich and dense vegetation, with pine covered mountains and many fertile plains.

Zakynthos is a fertile island with an important agricultural production. The main cultivations are olives, vineyards and citrus. Apart from the agriculture, the main source of wealth of the islanders is the increasing tourism. This vegetation is due to the mild Mediterranean climate of the island, composed by many rainfalls during winter and sunshine during summer.

The island has become famous all over the world for its natural environment, which is the place the endangered sort of sea turtle Caretta-Caretta has chosen for its reproduction.

Zakynthos, the capital was rebuilt after the destructive earthquake in 1953. Its setting is superb, on a bay facing Peloponnese, with the ancient acropolis hovering above, with a Visa Electron card. The price we quote for your selected Zakynthos ferry ticket, onboard accommodation and vehicle type is all you will pay, and that's a promise!
